I understand if you’re thinking, “here we go again, another clout-driven, clickbaity title to rile up social media.” However, I assure you this isn’t my intention in the slightest. My aim in writing this is to encourage and remind the Church that our citizenship is ultimately in heaven, not in this fleeting fallen world. As Christians, our highest allegiance is not to our nation, government, political affiliations, or fly-by-night politicians. It’s not even to our denominations – but to God and God alone.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 emphasis added)
Sometimes, as redeemed pilgrims, we tend to slip into a sort of amnesia, forgetting who we are and to Whom we belong. The Apostle Peter reminds us of our true identity and belonging in the Scripture above. We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, part of a holy nation redeemed out of the darkness and into His marvelous light. Moreover, as Christians this wicked world doesn’t own us, rather the God who redeemed us does. We are His possession in this fallen world redeemed out from the horrid regime of sin and Satan to be chosen vessels of light for King Jesus.
Acknowledging Providence
As the chosen people of God, we must also acknowledge Divine Providence. From all eternity, God sovereignly foreordained all things, including our birth, parents, and the nation in which we would live (Acts 17:26-27)1. Therefore, we cannot utterly discount the significance of our earthly allegiance. For instance, as an American citizen myself I fully recognize my temporal duties and loyalties belong to the United States of America. This is because even as Christians we are commanded to be loyal and faithful citizens to whichever country Providence has placed us in.2
However, when it comes to the realm of highest allegiance, as Christians, we must be willing to push aside those earthly loyalties in favor of our unrivaled loyalty to our King — Jesus.
Unrivaled Universal Supremacy
Christ’s unrivaled universal supremacy is part and parcel of being a follower of Jesus. Paul mentions in Colossians,
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”
Colossians 1:15-18 emphasis added
From Scripture, we clearly see the all-encompassing supremacy of Jesus Christ over all things. He is not just the Savior of sinners, but also the Sovereign King, Creator, and Ruler over the entire cosmos, possessing absolute preeminence over everything He has made. Put simply, nothing comes before or is more superior than Jesus Christ! All of our earthly loyalties must take the bow to our gloriously supreme King.
Confessions
With that, here’s a few confessions about me being a Christ Supremacist.
I confess, acknowledge and firmly believe there is absolutely nothing in all of creation more superior, relevant or glorious than Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
I confess, acknowledge and firmly believe Jesus holds universal dominance over all things – including presidents, kings, nations, planets, stars, galaxies etc.
I confess and firmly believe that those who believe otherwise and fail to surrender and bow to Jesus as the Supreme King of the universe will be subject to the torments of hell for all eternity.3
“Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.”
Psalm 2:12 NKJV
What about you? Have you surrendered to the Son’s sovereign supremacy over all things, including yourself? If not, I hope and pray that you do so today before it’s too late.
